The Dubbing Database

باب اسفنجی is one of several Persian dubs of SpongeBob SquarePants. Initially produced by Persians of Mashhad, the dub was was first released on DVD by Parsian Home Video, later switching to TDH Home Entertainment after the former's closure. Dozens of DVDs have been released since, each one having multiple random or themed episodes. As a result, some episodes have been dubbed twice, or in some cases, have different music and effects tracks on different DVDs. Asia Resane Cinema Home Entertainment and Kimiya have also released DVDs containing this dub.

For the earlier DVDs, they seemed to dub episodes in batches, typically based on the US DVDs. For example, the Truth or Square DVD (minus The Card) was a batch, the Viking-Sized Adventures DVD (with The Card) was a batch, the SpongeBob's Last Stand DVD was a batch, and so on. Later on they dubbed random episodes as part of a batch.

Persians of Mashhad would end up dropping the dub after season 9, so the dub was moved to Soren Studio in Tehran, keeping Mohammad Reza Solati as the male roles and dubbing director and Somaye Mohammadi as the translator. During this era, Mohammad Reza Solati and Arezou Sheikhi would become the only voice actors involved in the dub, unlike the previous era where more actors were involved, although the usual characters were kept with the same voices.

Unlike the previous seasons, season 13 premiered directly on TDH's streaming service TDH Films as separate episodes instead of DVDs.

باب اسفنجی began broadcast on IRIB Pooya & Nahal on 2013-03-20 and stopped airing on 2015-01-06. They aired the masters from the Parsian Home Video DVDs with a few changes, for example all dubbing information has been edited out. Some scenes were cut in various episodes as well. It aired before the channel, formerly known as IRIB Pooya, rebranded as IRIB Pooya & Nahal.

MYTV[]

MYTV, like uToon, played music videos based around shortened versions of episodes, produced by TDH Home Entertainment and distributed on DVD, in addition to episodes of the series, throughout the early 2010s.[5]

Persian Top Toon[]

باب اسفنجی has broadcasted on Persian Top Toon (channel based off of Persian Toon and Top Toon) since 2019-06-29.

Top Toon[]

باب اسفنجی was broadcast on Top Toon (channel based off of Persian Toon) from 2016-08-31 to 2017-01-31.

uToon[]

uToon broadcasted episodes of the series and handled premieres of episodes[6] from 2015-09-21 to 2018-04-13. They also broadcasted music videos based around shortened versions of episodes from 2015-10-15[7] to 2018-05-01[8] as well as the 2nd movie from time to time from 2015-08-27[9] to 2018-06-08[10].

Censorship[]

Sandypsimcensor

Original vs. censored

The dub has faced strict censorship with nearly every episode. Namely, scenes containing characters in bikini outfits are edited or cut. This practice has gained relative infamy due to the addition of proper clothing on these characters in some cases. Much of the censorship featured within a variety of these dubbed episodes is due to items of clothing (such as bikinis) being considered unorthodox in Iranian society due to Iran's Islamic law dictating much of Iran's society and government due to the country being a theocratic nation that goes by the laws and values of Islam.

Notes[]

  • Due to censorship, Sandy (and other female characters) wearing bikini was edited poorly with a dress.
    • In season 1, the screen was stretched on scenes with Sandy female characters to make only their heads be seen.
    • In season 5, they edited Sandy's bra out.
    • Starting with season 6, there is still censorship along with a new dress design.[11]
  • This might be due to Nickelodeon US TV rips being used for some episodes of this dub, covering the TV-Y7 rating with a TDH wordmark. Sometimes the Nickelodeon logo is also covered with the show's logo.
  • In conjunction with this dub, 7 DVDs were also released, each containing 10 original songs and music videos themed around the series. These songs were recorded in an unknown studio in Tehran, although they still feature the participation of the main actor, Mohammad Reza Solati.
    • These music videos have also been broadcast on TV and included on streaming services. The songs have also been released through music platforms such as Spotify.
