ふしぎの海のナディア is a 1990 Japanese anime steampunk/science-fiction television series produced by NHK. The concept for the series traces back to the mid-1970s when Hayao Miyazaki was approached by Toho to develop a show inspired by Jules Verne's works. However, this pitch was later bought over to NHK. To animate the show, the producers chose Gainax and its co-founder Hideaki Anno helmed the series. However, most episodes were outsourced to Group TAC and Sei Young. Set in an alternate reality 1889, the series focuses on Nadia, a 14-year old girl of unknown origins who posses an pendant known as the Blue Water and Jean, a warm-hearted French inventor as they travel across the planet on the run from their captors. It aired on NHK General TV from April 30, 1990 to April 21, 1991 with 39 episodes. The series ended up being a success for NHK and Toho which led to a feature film released in 1991, serving as a sequel as well as merchandise, video games, toys, books among many others. As of 2024, NHK holds full rights to the franchise.
