アルプスの少女ハイジ theme song, also called in Japan as Oshiete "おしえて" (Japanese for "Say me...", or more accurately "Tell me..."), is the most internationally recognized song from the popular animated series. The song's lyrics were written by Japanese writer and translator Eriko Kishida; It was composed by Takeo Watanabe, with arrangements by Yushi Matsuyama. The theme was performed by the Japanese singer Kayo Ishū, along with Nellie Schwartz,[1] who performed the song's yodeling, which remained intact in several versions.

The song tries to reflect Heidi's curiosity, facing this new world that she is discovering. She is fascinated from the beginning, for which she asks her grandpa to explain what she sees, since she is amazed.

The song's instrumental was recorded with French horns and harps in Switzerland, and later mixed in Japan with the singing voice of Kayo Ishū. The theme song was a smash hit, selling over a million disc copies in Japan and Europe.[2]

As with many other Japanese animated series, there are various other arrangements of the theme song depending on the region.

おしえて (Japanese Opening)[]

Japanese[]

Singers: Kayo Ishū, and Nellie Schwartz (yodeling)

This theme song is used in all 52 episodes of the series. Originally, it was used between January 6, 1974, and December 29, 1974, the anime's original airing period.

As will be seen below, the theme song received several dubs. In Spain, despite the fact that a version translated into Spanish would later be published on discs, it aired the opening in Japanese, both in its original broadcast, as well as in subsequent broadcasts and current reruns, on YouTube.

A French adaptation of the Japanese opening was produced in an unknown year, likely to be used for the dub's broadcast in France. For unknown reasons, this version went unreleased, and the dub used an adaptation of the German opening when airing.

Portuguese (Brasil)[]

There are two versions of the Brazilian opening. One that was shown in the early years of the SBT channel (called TVS at the time), which uses a different instrumental, but based in original; and other version, which uses the original Japanese instrumental. The adaptation of the SBT opening was composed by Emerson Aragão and Agnaldo Dantas. The translation of the lyrics was made by Marcelo Duran. The lyrics of both versions are exactly the same, translated directly from the European Spanish version.

The song in Brazil used in the SBT is the well-known adaptation named after the chorus, "Vovôzinho, diga-me" (Portuguese for: Grandpa, say me...).

Portuguese (European, RTP)[]

Opening used by channel I Program (currently RTP 1), for the last 26 episodes of the series, which were the only ones that received dub in this version, the rest being broadcast subtitled. Like the same dub, it is based on the European Spanish version, although it translates a different strophe of the song, which is not the same one used in other translations, or the original version. This version also includes a different yodei chant.

This would be the only opening of the many dubs produced in Portugal that was based on the Japanese, since all the others are based on the German version.

Spanish[]

"Abuelito, dime tú" (Spanish for "Grandpa, tell me"), is the name by which this theme song is known in all Spanish-speaking countries. Its popularity has been such that dozens of albums have been released in different Hispanic countries such as Mexico, Chile, and Spain itself, and today, it is still often used as a children's song. The translation of the theme song comes from Spain. This was not shown on its television broadcast, but it was released in 1975, immediately after the series ended, resulting in great success. The translation of the lyrics was the work of the Spanish composer Carlos Ramón-Amart.

The translation was reused by the Latin American Spanish version, making the lyrics of both versions exactly the same.

Originally, South African television did not air the series with a dubbed Afrikaans opening, instead airing simply the undubbed German opening. The dubbed version of the opening would be produced years after the dub.

Catalan (Balearic Islands)[]

Singers: TBA

Catalan dubs were first produced in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, this one being the opening shown by IB3, the regional television channel of this insular area of Spain. Catalonia did not produce its own dub until 2024. Curiously, a large part of the Catalan-speaking community is unaware or does not remember this opening, mainly for the aforementioned reason.

Heidi, Heidi, les muntanyes són el teu món,
Heidi, Heidi, perquè et sents a casa, allà dalt.
Semblen verds camps acaronats pel sol d'estiu.
Heidi, Heidi, tu seràs molt feliç.

Heidi, Heidi, per favor, torna aquí,
parla de felicitat.

Heidi, Heidi, the mountains are your world,
Heidi, Heidi, because you feel at home, up there.
They look like green fields caressed by the summer sun.
Heidi, Heidi, you will be very happy.

Heidi, Heidi, please come back here,
talk about happiness.

هايدي (Arabic Opening)[]

Singers: Sameera Nimri

Heidi Arabic dub was co-produced in Kuwait and the United States, with mixing and musical post-production being done on American territory. The work team located in Hollywood was made up of mainly Jordanian, Egyptian and Lebanese personal. The Egyptian composer Adel Asfour composed a complete soundtrack for this dub, which is quite atypical, compared to other international versions, consisting of several songs, in a traditional Arabic style, and with typical instruments of Middle Eastern music, including the opening and credits. All the songs sung are interpreted by the Jordanian singer Sameera Nimri.

The song highlights a series of characteristics of Heidi's character, including her kindness, generosity, and her love for people and animals, which are values that Islam professes precisely. With this, however, Heidi is not shown as a Muslim, since the same dub accepts the Christian faith presented in the series (references alluding to Christianity are not censored), but only tries to present Heidi as an example to follow for children. The latter is further confirmed when Basma Channel, in their alternate Islamic Arabic dub, uses the exact same lyrics to this opening.

In the Arab World, this theme song is used in all 52 episodes of the series. This song is very popular among the Arab audience, being by many the most recognizable song on the show, to the point that many Arabs are not familiar with other versions, such as the German, or Japanese, unusual for them.

Between the plains and the hills
Under the stars and the crescent moon
Through nature and beauty, the story resembles fantasy.
The story of a girl named Heidi.
The story of a girl named Heidi.
She lived her life with love and kindness.
She sang to the people, the flowers, and the birds.
Beautiful Heidi, generous Heidi, orphaned Heidi.

She is like a breeze.
She is medicine for the sick.
She heals our wounds.
She is for the morning light.
Beautiful Heidi, generous Heidi, orphaned Heidi
Orphaned Heidi, orphaned Heidi.
