サクラ大戦 活動写真 is a 2001 Japanese anime action-adventure film directed by Mitsuru Hongo, animated by Production I.G., produced by Kadokawa Shoten and distributed by Toei. The first film in the Sakura Wars series and the fourth animated adaptation of said series, it is chronologically set sometime after the events of Sakura Wars 3: Is Paris Burning? and focuses on the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, in which after Ogami left for Paris, must survive with the help of their new leader Ratchet Altair to save the revue from getting obsolete by the American company Douglas-Stewart. The film was released on December 22, 2001.
"活動写真" (katsudō shashin) in the title is an old-fashioned word for a movie or, more specifically, a screen adaptation of a stage play. It was coined during the Meiji era by calquing the English term "motion picture". By the late Taishō era era, it gave way to the word "映画" (eiga, 'picture projection, projected picture(s)'), which still is the modern word for "movie".
