スポンジ・ボブ is the Japanese dub of SpongeBob SquarePants. It has previously aired on Animax, BS Fuji, MTV, NHK BS2, NHK BS Premium, Nickelodeon, Tokyo MX1 and Tokyo MX2, and it is currently airing on NHK Educational TV and Kids Station.

Broadcast history[]

Nickelodeon[]

スポンジ・ボブ premiered on Nickelodeon in January 8, 2000. It would stop once the former Nickelodeon shut down on September 30, 2009 until the channel came back on January 31, 2018. On January 31, 2022, the channel shut down once again and became a VOD service.

MTV[]

スポンジ・ボブ premiered on MTV on October 5, 2009. These airings served as the replacement for those that were on the then defunct Nickelodeon Japan, but they stopped a little over a year later on March 31, 2011 once more channels had picked the show up.

Kids Station[]

スポンジ・ボブ premiered on Kids Station on February 3, 2023, starting with the ninth season.

Trivia[]

  • Patrick (except the first movie and prior to Season 9), Plankton (except the first movie), Mermaid Man (only Season 3) and Barnacle Boy (prior to Season 4), Bubble Buddy (Season 2) and DoodleBob (Season 2) are voiced by female actresses in this dub.
    • Bubble Bass was voiced by a female actress in the Season 1 episode "Pickles" (his debut), but was voiced by a male voice actor in his next speaking appearance.
  • The episode pair "Who R Zoo?" and "Kwarantined Krab" did not air during NHK's run of Season 12, likely due to the unfortunate timing of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • There is no information as to whether a dub was produced for these episodes.
    • It is also the only dub of the series to not include the episode in TV or streaming releases, despite the temporary ban on the episode being lifted in every other country.

Translations[]

  • Mr. Krabs is called "Kani-san" in the dub. "Kani" is Japanese for "crab," and "-san" is a suffix attached to the end of a person's name to refer to them formally in Japan.
  • Likewise, Ms. Puff's Japanese name, "Puff-sensei," has the suffix "-sensei," which is attached to the end of a teacher's name to refer to them formally in Japan.
  • Finally, Squidward's Japanese name, "Ikarudo", is a portmanteau of "ika" (the Japanese word for Squid) and "-rudo" (derived from the Japanese spelling of the name "Edward")

Footnotes[]

  1. except "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout".
