バーバパパ is one of two Japanese dubs of Barbapapa. As the first Japanese dub of the show, it originally ran on Tokyo Channel 12 from April 4, 1977 to March 27, 1978, airing every Monday to Friday from 19:15 to 19:23 (JST). From 1990 to 1992 at the earliest, WOWOW began airing the show.

As the second season saw a switch in animation from the Netherlands to Japan, the series is from then-on recorded originally in Japanese, to be dubbed in French and subsequently other languages. There are also episodes of the series that were aired solely in Japan, being left out of rotation in other countries where the episode count in the season is 55.

Notes[]

  • This is one of a few dubs of the first season to feature individual voices for the characters, although the voice cast is limited between two actors.
  • The opening theme used in this dub is its own exclusive song, a completely different arrangement than the original theme.
    • This dub is the only version to outright not use the original theme song for the series in any way, with a technical exception for the first Hebrew dub, which initially did not air any theme at all.
    • The first few seconds of the theme song, which feature Barbapapa snapping his fingers before shapeshifting and forming the series' Japanese logo, is original animation produced specifically for the dub.
    • The opening was composed by Chuuji Kinoshita, and written by Zenzo Matsuyama.
    • The entire song was used as the theme song, without any cuts whatsoever.
  • In season two, episodes exclusive to Japan (whom, at this point, was also animating the show) would air. This affirms that a little more than 55 episodes were produced, but were not distributed anywhere outside of Japan.
  • The transformation phase the Barbapapas say when shapeshifting is translated here simply as "バーバトリック".
