マイリトルポニー〜トモダチは魔法〜 is the Japanese dub of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Originally airing on TV Tokyo in Japan for two seasons, from April 2, 2013 to March 25, 2014, the dub would soon enter a hiatus. Reruns took place courtesy of Dlife and Disney Channel starting August 4, 2018, and September 3, 2018 respectively. Production of the dub would soon continue, albeit with a different voice cast, as the third season premiered on Dlife on August 3, 2019. After the fourth season finished airing on March 28, 2020, the dub entered yet another hiatus. The channel shut down a mere 3 days later.
The dub was revived once more on December 2, 2021, with the season five premiere on Disney Channel; this time, the new voice cast was recorded from South Korea, instead of Japan, most likely for budget reasons.
The dub was available to stream on Netflix. The first four seasons are currently available on Hulu in Japan, alongside the original version. Starting September 11, 2021[1], the official Japanese My Little Pony YouTube channel started uploading full episodes of the dub. Any cut parts of the TV Tokyo broadcast were re-recorded by the seasons 3-4 voice cast, for syndication purposes.

History[]
2013–2014: TV Tokyo[]
マイリトルポニー〜トモダチは魔法〜 first premiered on TV Tokyo in Japan on April 2, 2013. The first two seasons were broadcast in both Japanese and English.[9] It featured numerous formatting changes and cuts, such as a completely redone opening theme, another opening theme that replaced the first one starting with the show's fourteenth episode, a third opening theme that replaced the second starting with the fortieth episode, a closing theme, and a second closing theme that replaced the first one in the show's twenty-seventh episode, with new background visuals to accompany the second closing starting with the thirty-second episode.
Both closing themes contain two segments. The first is called "Ponies' Gallery", which displays clips of the characters Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, the three Cutie Mark Crusaders, Zecora, and Cheerilee. It does not change from episode to episode. The second is a preview of the next episode that displays clips and the title of the next episode.
The dub completed its run with two seasons on March 25, 2014.[10]
Little Pony TV[]
Little Pony TV is a short live-action segment inserted before closing credits in the Japanese version of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic. The segment is presented by Suzuko Mimori, who also voices Pinkie Pie and sings the first intro theme for the Japanese version. The segment features Mimori and Twilight Sparkle talking, and ends with a segment called "Lucky Pony Slot", which functions like a slot machine, and picks a different character each episode.
Best Selection[]
Beginning April 1, 2014, TV Tokyo ran a rebroadcast of select Friendship Is Magic episodes called "My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic Best Selection".[11] The rebroadcasted episodes were largely unchanged from their initial premiere on TV Tokyo, but the run included a fourth opening theme and used the extended version of the English theme song as its closing theme. The ending sequence's "Ponies' Gallery" also includes Princess Celestia.
2018–present: Dlife and Disney Channel[]
Starting August 4, 2018, reruns of the first two seasons would take place on Dlife. Additionally on September 3, 2018, the Japanese dub aired on Disney Channel, with episodes 1 to 5 being broadcast on continuous loop and regular broadcasts from Mondays to Fridays at 7:00.[12] The format of the Japanese dub for these reruns hews much closer to the English original. For instance, the extended opening and closing themes, as well as the Little Pony TV ending segment, are all done away with. The opening theme is now a dub of the original English opening, while the closing is the equivalent of what the English closing theme is. Additionally, the episodes no longer feature time cuts. There are also no longer Japanese credits for the ending: the credits are left in English.
The dub continued with season 3, which has the same format as the reruns of seasons 1-2, but a different voice cast. It aired on Dlife starting August 3, 2019. The fourth season ran from November 2, 2019 to March 28, 2020, when the dub entered another hiatus. The channel then shut down on March 31. Production would resume when season five premiered on Disney Channel on December 2, 2021, featuring a third set of voice actors that were located in Goyang, South Korea, as opposed to the usual Japan. The dub is now currently on season six.

Notes[]
- Various decisions were made in the Japanese dub that only apply to the first two seasons' broadcast on TV Tokyo:
- The credits at the beginning of the episode are edited out, and placed during the first sequence of the closing theme, at the very beginning. Only the episode title is displayed during the episode itself.
- Small time cuts are made within each episode itself.
- Introductory shots of some characters have their names written on screen in Katakana.
- Although most songs are dubbed, a few of them were undubbed from the original, and instead Japanese subtitling is shown on screen. These include "Art of the Dress", "Winter Wrap Up", "The Heart Carol", "Love Is in Bloom", and "Becoming Popular".
- The holiday special Best Gift Ever, which doubles as the show's 196th episode overall, was dubbed and aired during production of season four.
- In "The Cutie Pox", Apple Bloom speaks an upper-class dialect of Japanese instead of French. This is technically an error, as the fleur de lis symbol represents France, making it inaccurate for her to speak any language apart from French.
