名探偵(めいたんてい)コナン (known as Detective Conan and due to legal restrictions, known as Case Closed in American English) is a 1996 Japanese anime television series produced by TMS Entertainment, based on the manga of the same name by Gosho Aoyama. It is the 16th longest anime series to date, with over 1000 episodes.

Shinichi Kudo is a high school detective who sometimes works with the police to solve cases. During an investigation, he is attacked by members of a crime syndicate known as the Black Organization. They force him to ingest an experimental poison, but instead of killing him, the poison transforms him into a child. Adopting the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and keeping his true identity a secret, Kudo lives with his childhood friend Ran Mori and her father Kogoro Mori, who is a private detective. Throughout the series, he tags along on Kogoro's cases, but when he is able to solve one, he uses a tranquilizer needle to put Kogoro to sleep, and impersonates his voice using a voice changer to reveal the solution to the case. He also enrolls in a local elementary school where he makes friends with a group of classmates who form their own Junior Detective club (Detective Boys). While he continues to dig deeper into the Black Organization, he frequently interacts with a variety of characters, including his professor friend Dr. Agasa, Ran's friend Sonoko Suzuki, a fellow teenage detective Heiji Hattori, various police detectives from different regions, and Kaito Kid.

Kudo later encounters an elementary school transfer student, Ai Haibara, who reveals herself to be the creator of the poison that shrunk him. She too had ingested the poison, but she is no longer affiliated with the Black Organization. She soon joins the Detective Boys.

Trivia[]

  • Despite also being available on home video (as well as receiving a theatrical release in selected territories) as one film, The Scarlet School Trip is part of the main show's run.
  • Due to its irregular broadcast schedule, all four episodes of the Police Academy Arc: Wild Police Story miniseries as well as said miniseries' finale special are also part of the main show's run.

Other versions[]

  • Despite never being used, TMS has English scripts for every episode that are still being made today.

Background information[]

  • TMS has made some edits for its international dubs:
    • They have created a logo with the official translation of the title, Detective Conan (stylized as Detective CONAN). When the Japanese logo appears, a black screen with this logo, and the copyright information replaces it.
      • However, after opening 5, this title card was not used; instead the English title cards freeze before they switch to Japanese.
      • The logo was localized in French, German, Korean (the Tooniverse dub) and Vietnamese.
      • This is not the case in Arabic (both dubs), English (USA, the FUNimation dub), and French (they use the logo, but instead of the title card that was used in the TMS edit, they pause the video at the moment before the logo, and put their localized logo and localized copyright information).
    • After the opening narration (the dialogue of either Shinichi or Conan before the opening starts), the instrumentals of the opening speech repeats, causing it to be off sync and fade out before the Japanese version did.
      • This is not the case for Arabic (both dubs made their own opening), Cantonese (depending on the episode, they either used the album version or the TV sized versions), Italian (which made their own openings) and Korean dubs (both dubs, the KBS 2TV dub made their own opening).
    • The credits are in English.
      • This isn't the case for the French, Italian and Korean dubs.
  • Specials are split into multiple parts depending on the duration.
