Censorship[]
Several references to homosexuality, particularly Luz and Amity's relationship, were censored in this dub, as the dubbing studio likely felt that the LGBT themes were not appropriate for a children's TV show. However, LGBT content does not experience censorship in Taiwan, where same-sex marriage has been legal since May 2019.
For example, in the episode "Knock, Knock, Knocking on Hooty's Door", any mention of Luz and Amity's relationship was censored:
- Although the song that plays when Luz and Amity travel through the Tunnel of Love was left undubbed and intact, several lines were changed in the subtitles:
- "We could hold wholesome hands for hours" was translated as simply "We could hold hands for hours".
- "You'll be my sweetheart" was translated as "You'll be my sweet friend" (though the subtitles for "My wholesome magic sweetheart" translate "sweetheart" accurately).
- "And will you be my steady?" was translated as "And will you be my best friend?"
- The sign saying "Amity bee mine!" was subtitled as "Amity bee my great friend!"
- Amity's line "I mean, us, dating?" was translated as "Us...dressing up and traveling together?"
- Infamously, Amity's line "Do you want to go out with me?" was translated as "Let's dress up and travel together!". This particular line became notorious in the fandom due to its odd phrasing and censorship of the original line.
- While Luz's line "Amity Blight, do you want to go out with me?" was left intact, "go out" was translated literally in a way that the line can instead be interpreted as "Do you want to travel with me?".
- Hooty calling Amity "Luz's new GF" was translated as "Luz's new awesome best friend".
- Despite this, the Tunnel of Love's name was translated accurately, and the episode was not edited visually in any way.
- The scene where Luz and Amity kiss in "Through the Looking Glass Ruins" was cut when the episode aired on Disney Channel in Taiwan, but was left intact on Disney+. This was more likely due to a common Southeast Asian feed, which was shared with the Indonesian and Malay dubs.
