Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is an American comedy film from 1994, directed by Tom Shadyac and written by Shaydac, Jack Bernstein and Jim Carrey, who also stars as Ace Ventura, a detective, who specializes in animal cases and who is tasked with recovering the Miami Dolphins' abducted mascot.
The film was produced by Morgan Creek Productions on a $15 million budget and released by Warner Bros. in February 1994. It made $72.2 million in the United States and Canada, as well as $35 million in other areas, for a total of $107.2 million globally. It received generally negative feedback from critics. Carrey's performance helped the film develop a cult following among male teens. In addition to establishing Carrey's film career, it also launched a franchise, producing the sequel feature Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), the animated television series Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1995-2000), and, later, a standalone made-for-television sequel Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective (2009).
