Arnold Marquis was a German actor and voice actor. He was one of the most famous VAs in Germany at that time and was called the King of German voice actors, a title he shared with his colleague Gert Günther Hoffmann.
Biography[]
Marquis graduated from the acting school attached to the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus (Düsseldorf theatre) by theater director Louise Dumont. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht during the Second World War. After 1945, he went to Berlin.
One year later, he took on his first dubbing role, which was to be followed by over 1400 more. Marquis became the German voice of Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and others due to his unmistakable timbre.
Theater engagements took him to Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and finally back to Berlin. In the 1940s, he appeared in productions by the DEFA (German Film Inc.).
He died of lung cancer in 1990 and was buried in the Dahlem Forest Cemetery.
Arnold Marquis was married three times and had a daughter, Gwendolyn Marquis, who lives in Upper Bavaria and works as a lawyer.
