Asterix and the Vikings is a 2006 English-language French-Danish traditionally-animated adventure film based on the French comic book series Asterix, presented by M6 Studio in collaboration with Danish's A. Film A/S, a production from M6 Studio, Mandarin SAD, and 2D3D Animations.

It is directed by two Danish filmmakers, Stefan Fjeldmark and Jesper Møller, from a screenplay by Jean-Luc Goossens and Stefan Fjeldmark, with additional dialogue from Philip LaZebnik. This film is a loose adaptation of the story of the comic album Asterix and the Normans, by René Goscinny.

It is the eight animated Asterix film, the third to be produced outside France, the second Asterix film not produced in it's native language, but rather, it was produced, recorded, and animated in the English language first, [note 1] [2] [3] and the first to utilize American actors. It is also the last animated Asterix film to be traditionally-animated in 2D, as the next two films would be animated in 3D.

This film first premiered in theatres in Belgium on April 5, 2006, later in France on April 12, 2006, through distributor SND Films, while the Danish version was released in Denmark on June 2, 2006, through SF Film. The English version was released in Canada on July 14, 2006, and in the United Kingdom & Ireland on January 20, 2007.

While tutoring Chief Vitalstatistix's rebellious nephew, Asterix and Obelix must rescue him from Vikings who wish to learn the meaning of fear to become invincible.

Notes[]

  • This is the only piece of Asterix-related media produced in Denmark, and is one of two films to be primarily produced in English language, unusual for Asterix films.
  1. The English recording for the film was completed in February 2004; after production for the film is completed, it was later dubbed into French.
