Bali is a French-Canadian animated television series, based on a series of French children's books written by Magdalena Guirao-Jullien (under the mononym Magdalena), illustrated by Laurent Richard, and published by Editions Flammarion. It was produced by Planet Nemo Animation and Subsequence Entertainment, in association with Radio-Canada, TVOntario, Knowledge Network, France 5, Disney Channel France and RTBF, and with the participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund, the Quebec Film and Television Tax Credit, Telefilm Canada, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, and the Canadian Television Fund (or the Fonds canadien de television in French). Currently, the distribution rights to the series are held by French animation studio Xilam.
In 2011, Planet Nemo, in association with Disney Junior (France), produced a spin-off series entitled J'apprends la langue des signes avec Bali. Using a combination of 3D animation and live-action footage, this series focuses on Bali and his new friend Cléo, who is Deaf. Due to heavily featuring French Sign Language, the show was never released internationally, although an official English title exists - Bali Signing Time, along with official English subtitles for one episode.
A second season was in development beginning in 2007 (alongside plans for Banzai! Bali, a feature film which never materialized), and was officially ordered by TVO, PBS[2], and Radio-Canada in 2012, slated for a 2013 release. However, due to Planet Nemo's impending bankruptcy, production on the second season abruptly shut down in January 2013, and never resumed. This season would have seen the show's original language change to English.[3]
In 2013, production on Nie martw się, Tamaro, a 23-minute special episode, began at Studio Miniatur Filmowych - the studio responsible for the Polish dub of the first season. The special has a copyright date of 2016, but only premiered on TVP ABC on October 30, 2019.[4] This is likely due to the legal battle between Planet Nemo and Xilam, over the distribution rights to the show, that was occuring around the same time.[5] No English or French dubs exist of this special, although there is an official English title - Cheer Up, Tamara.[6]
There also exists a set of 13 episodes, known as Bali II in TV listings. These are remakes of 13 episodes from the first season - renimated by Studio Minitaur Filmowych, shortened to 8 minutes, and with all dialogue changed to a narrator describing the character's actions and performing their voices. Despite having copyright dates of 2017, they did not premiere until September 2019, on TVP ABC. These episodes have only aired in Poland, and likely will not be distributed internationally.
