Barbapapa is the Canadian English dub of the show of the same name. It is one of five English dubs of the series overall. The dub aired on TVO in Canada from September 17, 1977 to September 10, 1985, and also aired on Knowledge Kids from 1985 to 1987.

In 1981, episodes of this dub were released on Betamax VHS tapes in the United Kingdom, distributed by Spectrum. The Pre-Cert website calls it the "Americanised version" to differentiate it from the UK dub, which never saw a home media release itself. Those tapes skipped the "Beach" episode for some unclear reason.

It is perhaps the most well known English Barbapapa dub, as it's the only one to use the popular "Clickety click, Barbatrick!" transformation phrase. It is also the only dub to air in places outside of its country of origin: the dub has reportedly aired in Thailand on Channel 11 in 1987[3], as well as national stations in Nepal, Nigeria, and Maldives.

Despite all of this, none of the cast and crew behind this dub were ever identified.

Notes[]

  • Only the first season was dubbed, like nearly all of the English dubs.
  • The characters all have individual voices in this dub, as opposed to being voiced all by one narrator, like in the first season of the original.
  • When the characters say their transformation phrase, the "Barbatrick!" part is always done using the same voice as the narrator. This applies to the Barbamamas as well.
  • This dub uses the same songs from the British English dub, including the theme song.
  • The first 2001 Japanese DVD of the series has part of this dub on it, at the start of the second episode ("Le feu") where Barbapapa helps to get the leopard back to the zoo. This proves that this dub was most likely used as a base for the Aniplex dub, despite not having the same script.
