Carrie is an American supernatural horror film from 1976, directed by Brian De Palma, based on a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen and adapted from Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same title. Sissy Spacek starred in the film as Carrie White, a quiet young girl who is routinely teased and tormented at school. She eventually gains telekinetic abilities and uses it to exact revenge on her abusers. Supporting cast members include Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt, P. J. Soles, Betty Buckley, and John Travolta.
Carrie was released theatrically by United Artists on November 16, 1976, and was a critical and financial success, earning nearly $33.8 million in revenue against the films $1.8 million budget. At the 49th Academy Awards, it got two nominations: Best Actress (Spacek) and Best Supporting Actress (Laurie). Critics and audiences alike unanimously regard it as one of the best films based on King's works.
