The Dubbing Database

Case Closed is one of two American English dubs of 名探偵コナン. It premiered on May 24, 2004 on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim block. Due to low ratings, only 50 episodes aired on the channel[1], with the rest being aired on Funimation Channel.

Funimation started releasing their DVDs of the series on August 24, 2004 in North America. According to the voice actor of Richard Moore, R. Bruce Elliott, they dubbed all of seasons 1 through 4, and half of season five, which consisted of 123 episodes (which, due to splitting specials into parts, consisted of 130 episodes in the Funimation/international order,) and the first 6 movies, which were all done in 2004. [2]

Funimation ceased dubbing of the series due to the DVD sales not justifying the cost of the license. Despite the high requests and petitions by fans to continue the show, a forum post on the website by product manager Adam Steeler stating Funimation was done with the show. Starting March 2013, the series remained online-only (Funimation streamed it) until May 4, 2018, when their license expired.[3]

On November 16, 2013, the series' distribution/licensing rights in Australia/New Zealand were acquired by Hanabee from TMS and began releasing the DVDs of the show the following year. Hanabee's DVD releases of Seasons 1 & 2, which released the following year, have dual audio, with this dub being used as the video rights to that dub were reverted to TMS by that year. All later releases of the show in that region since then are subtitled.

Notes[]

  • Like most of the dubs, openings 1 and 2 are offsync, due to repeating the narration's instrumental.
    • Additionally, unlike the rest of the dubs and the original Japanese version, instead of saying a quote, introducing the viewers to what is going to happen in the episode, the opening speech is replaced by Shinichi as himself or as Conan introducing himself and how he got shrunk.
  • Due to only half of the 5th season being dubbed, the series debut of an important character, Ai Haibara, is never released or dubbed. However, Funimation has dubbed some movies featuring her, as named Vi Graythorn, causing a plothole in the series.
    • Furthermore, the English release of the manga (by Viz Media) named her Anita Hailey.
  • Conan, Gin and Vodka are the only main characters to have their name kept the same.
    • The name changes were due to an old rule by TMS Entertainment; they have since removed it.
  • In the first and third endings, the song is offsync, and ends early. This is because the album cut is used. [4][5]
