Channel 9 is a Greek television channel that broadcasts in the region of Attica. The channel broadcasts newscasts, original productions, foreign films, and cartoons. From late 2003, at a time the channel was called TVCosmopolis (also known as TVC). From that point on until 2008, the channel would broadcast programs from Nickelodeon in a block, also known as Nick Toons.[2]

Despite being considered as an informational channel, the majority of the channel's programming since the early 2010s, consists of telemarketing.[3][4][5]

History

In 1992, the channel was launched as Tile Tora, founded by journalist Gregoris Michalopoulos. In 2000-01, the channel was bought by Stathis Tsotsoros (Alpha TV) and was renamed POLIS TV or POLIS for short.[6] Michalopoulos became the channel's vice president.[7][8] In 2003, the channel was renamed TV Cosmopolis or TVC for short. In 2005, the channel changed ownership again, and was temporarily renamed back to POLIS in preparation for an overhaul. In 2005-10, a fire almost completely ruined the station's headquarters, along with some archive material. In 2005-12, the channel was renamed to Channel 9, and hasn't changed its main idents (made with an 4:3 aspect ratio), since then.[9] In 2010, the channel started focusing on economy shows, with Panagiotis Mpousmpourelisa at the head. The channel's current shareholders are Xanatech Limited, a group of off-shore companies (54,76%), Maria Kontomina's Mantelord Investments (44,84%), Nikos Evangelatos (0,29%) and Dimitris Kontominas' Sixomen Limited (0,11%).[5][10]

Between 2004 and 2006, the channel was infamous for strikes by its crew and its executives firing employees.[11][12] The channel would slowly start constantly airing replays of other shows, and there would be a potential shutdown of the station.[13] At the end of 2006, journalist Nikos Evangelatos was forced to resing, following improper financial handling, firing all of the station's 390 employees.[14][15] Since then, Channel 9 has gone through economic redevelopment, something that has managed to progress slowly into the new digital age.

In 2007-02, Channel 9 started broadcasting live from its website.[16] In 2013-12, Channel 9 was added to Cosmote TV.[17] It was removed from the service in 2018-11.[18]

Ownership

Until mid-2006, journalist Nikos Evangelatos held a significant share in the station.[19][20][21][22] Behind the journalist was businessman Dimitris Kontominas, and only because Greek law at the time did not allow individual ownership of more than one television channel and two radio stations. The law has since changed and Dimitris Kontominas is the majority shareholder.[23]

The channel has several times changed ownership in its history. The first company to operate the station was the Tiletora Anonymous Radio Television Company, which was established on 1992-02-06.[24] A year later, the operation of the channel under the 19205/E license of local signal in Attica was legalized,[25] and on 1998-03-20, the Ministry for the Press issued a decision, according to which, the channel was re-legalized as a regional one.[26] Since its inception, the channel's headquarters would be initially located at Lycabettus St. 17 and later on Ilias Iliou St. 15, until mid-2001, when it was moved to Kallithea.[27][28]

On 2000-06-30, the organization's statute was altered, by adding the purpose of producing films for the needs of the channel,[29] and a few months later, due to a change of ownership, the name of the organization was changed to Polis Anonymous Television Company.[30] Journalist Petros Diplas became its president.[8] In mid-2004, the station was sold and the name of the previous operator of the station changed to Mediterranean Television Enterprises SA,[31] which shut down one year later.[32] On 2004-05-25, Radio Television Operations Cosmopolis TVC SA was established, as a conversion of the same-named joint venture[33][34][35] and which took over again the television channel, purchased from Polis SA. By mid-2005, the major shareholder would appear to be Stathis Tsotsoros, president of the directors' board and chief executive on Alpha TV and Channel 9,[11][36] and the representative was Vasilis Vasilogamvros.[11][37] More specifically, Nikos Evangelatos (23,764%), World Hellenic Information SA (25%), Attica Operation of Audiovisual Programming SA (25%), New Era of Audiovisual Programming SA (15%), Radio Television Operations Champions SA (10,0171%) and POLIS NET Consultants (1,2189%) were the shareholders.[38]

On 2005-10-03, the organization was last renamed as Channel Nine - 9 Anonymous Company, and the station was transferred to Pavlou Melas St. 26 in Rentis, Piraeus.[39] At the same time, it started to maintain a branch office at Kontoi St. 11-13, also in Renti, where the former production offices of its sister channel, Alpha TV, were housed.[40]

In late 2010, the organization's statute was altered, with an expansion of activities,[41] while two years later, the station's headquarters were transferred to the old facilities of Alpha TV in Paiania.[42][43][44]

Programming

Channel 9’s programming originally was based on newscasts, original productions and cartoons. The channel had nine daily newscasts to match its name. As of 2010, the channel’s news operations consisted of a daily economic zone, the main newscast, a sign language newscast, a sports newscast, and a newscast from Al Jazeera English translated into Greek from 2009 to 2013, a first for Greek television.[45][46] Other programming would include children’s series, foreign films from Village Roadshow[47] and original productions, mainly medical ones. Until 2008, the majority of the channel's programming consisted of cartoons from Nickelodeon, which were formerly broadcast on Alpha Kids and Alpha TV. Channel 9 has also aired sports events such as Bundesliga,[2] Eredivisie,[48] the Scotland Premier League,[2] NBA[49] and Skoda Foot Volley 2006, as well as programming from MTV Europe[50] and productions for its sister channel, Alpha TV, since its change of ownership in 2000 (such as TSA, I Kouzina tis Mamas and Oikogeneiakes Istories). Currently, almost all of its programming in the daytime consists of telemarketing.

Various local stations in Greece, including Star Central Greece, NET TV in western Peloponnesus, the Olympic Radio Television in Peloponnesus, Kriti TV in Crete, Super B in western Greece, Delta TV in Thraki, Center TV in south Macedonia, Cosmos TV (a subsidiary channel of Channel 9, nowadays called Kanali 9) and Dion TV in central Macedonia, In-Channel, New TV, Flash TV and TV 10, have aired a significant part of programming from Channel 9, as part of a project formerly known as POLIS Net.[51] Polis Net Consultants, the company behind the project, was established on 2000-09-28.[52] Stathis Tsotsoros, Vasilis Vasilogamvros and Petros Diplas have been its presidents in the past.[53][54]

Kanali 9

Not to be confused with Nickelodeon Plus.

Kanali 9 (also known as Channel 9 Thessaloniki) is the sister station of Channel 9 in Thessaloniki. The channel was founded by the Thessalonian entrepreneurs and owners of Kosmoradio 95.1. It began broadcasting in the beginning of 1992, with a musical and entertainment profile as CosmoTV and was considered the first music channel in Thessaloniki airing video clip.

With its old name, it was available throughout Central Macedonia and Thessaly, while it was exported to Kozani and northwestern Euboea.[112] In the middle of 2000, the station's ownership was transfered to RSO 91.7, and was renamed to Balkan TV[113] or Music Station B.

In the middle of next year (2001) the station changed its ownership again, and was renamed to Cosmos TV[114] with a change of profile, changing it from music to informational-entertainment. At the same time, it started working with the newly established and cooperative regional TV news channel in Attica, POLIS TV, later called TV Cosmopolis (now Channel 9), airing part of its program to Thessaloniki.

It would boadcast daily several entertainment programs, such as movies from Finos Film and children's cartoons from Nickelodeon. However, at the beginning of 2008, it was renamed as Kanali 9[115], broadcasting more entertainment programs, cinematic programs in collaboration with Village Cinemas and children's animation from foreign producers, alongside Channel 9.

Ownership

The channel has changed several times ownership in its history. To date, the organization that manages the channel is Kosmoradiotileoptiki SA[116][117]. It was originally established on 1992-02-11, under its current name[118]. On 2000-08-29, due to a change of ownership, the name of the company was renamed to Balkan TV Broadcasting Corporation[113]. On 2001-06-26, due to a second ownership change, it returned to its old name[114] and remains so until today. The station belongs to the business group of Dimitris Kontominas, who owns the local radio station Alpha 96.5 in Thessaloniki.

Radio counterparts

POLIS 88.6

POLIS FM was an old radio counterpart of Channel 9, at a time it was known as POLIS. It was founded on 2000-06-20, and would air Greek folk and modern music, as well as informative and entertainment shows.[119] It moved its headquarters from the Syngrou Avenue in Kallithea, to Agia Thekla Street in Agia Paraskevi in 2005-03.[120] changed its name to John Greek on 2005-05-26.[121]

Ράδιοεννέα 98.9

Ράδιο 9 (stylized as Ράδιοεννέα) was the radio counterpart of Channel 9.

Trivia

  • During airings of SpongeBob SquarePants on Channel 9 in 2007-11the National Council for Radio and Television started investigations regarding a claim made by one of its members, in which he says that "the show contains violent scenes for children."[122]
  • A telemarketing show promoting a camera called "L'espion" by Oikos Missias which aired on Channel 9 (then called Polis) and TV 10, one of its co-operating channels at the time,[49] gained attention in the mid-2010s, as it was featured in a reaction video made by popular YouTuber 2J, which has surpassed 2 million views. In the video, he makes fun of the supposedly realistic acting and the script.[123]
  • During early broadcasts of Nickelodeon shows, the network would air 90's bumpers of the American network, similarly to other stations, like Nickelodeon Russia on its early days.
    • In 2005-12the channel, alongside Nickelodeon idents and promos, received an update in look, and thus the latter ones receive the Splat format, notably used in the US around the mid-2000s.
  • In 2006, during commercial breaks, short clips with shots of various places, such as Greek islands, would be shown.
