Difuze (formerly known as Audio Postproduction SPR, simply SPR, and Technicolor Services Thomson) is a Canadian recording studio that was founded back in 1931. It is the largest French dubbing provider in Canada. It also provides English dubbing as well.
History[]
Difuze's history begins in 1931 with the founding of Associated Screen Industries (ASI), a film production laboratory that operated during World War II. In 1968, ASI was acquired by Harold Greenberg with help from his brothers (Ian, Harvey and Sidney) and from that year until 1970 the company began offering dubbing and post-production services.[1]
In parallel, in 1968, the post-synchronization company Sonilab was founded.
In 1970, ASI was reorganized and incorporated into the new Bellevue Pathé company. In 1972, Bellevue Pathé acquired film post-production equipment from ONIX Films, expanding its services into dubbing and post-production.
In 1973, Harold Greenberg acquired Astral Limited and merged it with Bellevue Pathé, creating Astral Bellevue Pathé. In 1977, Sonilab was sold to Télé-Métropole.
In 1979, Studio Place Royale, a dubbing and post-production company, was founded. In 1993, Bellevue Pathé's technical services division was renamed AstralTech.[2]
In 1997, Sonilab studios were sold for $5.7 million to Claude Gagnon with financial assistance from the Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec to found Covitec.
In February 1999, Astral Communication became the majority shareholder (63.3%) of the Covitec Groupe, and AstralTech started to operate under the Covitec brand.
On October 3, 2000, Astral sold its technical services subsidiary Covitec to Technicolor. This decision was made due to Covitec's difficulty in competing with Technicolor's new laboratory in Quebec. Also, Astral wanted to focus on digital media and developing television stations in English and French.
In 2001, Studio Place Royale started using its acronym (SPR) as its main brand.
In 2003, the Covitec brand was replaced by Technicolor Services Thomson.
Difuze was founded in 2018 through the merger of Technicolor Services Thomson, SPR and subtitling company CNST.
In October 2023, Difuze acquired the Toronto-based sound post-production studio, Wanted! Sound & Picture.
