Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might is one of several English dubs of ドラゴンボールZ 地球まるごと超決戦. It was aired in syndication in three parts over a two-week period in November 1997, between the 45th and 46th episodes of the edited Ocean dub of Dragon Ball Z. It later aired as a compiled movie on Cartoon Network's Toonami block, on January 29, 1999, and was shown at least seven more times through 2001. This version never got a home release until 2013, when Funimation released the Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon Edition DVD box set, which included the Ocean dub episodes and movies as they were aired on Toonami.

Censorship[]

This televised version was heavily edited for content and length, much like every episode in the Ocean dub.[1]

  • Several scenes were extended in order to padded out the film's runtime to fit into the length of three episodes.
  • Blood was completely edited out on characters. The violence in general was toned down by adding flash-like jagged-edge shapes that cover most of the screen whenever there was a blow to someone's head.
  • Perhaps the most infamous of these edits is when Turles forces Gohan to stare at the false moon he generated. Originally, Turles holds onto Gohan's head, prying his eyes open; the edited dub now has Turles grab him by the shoulders instead, with his fingers digitally painted out in close-up shots of Gohan. (Strangely, the shot where Gohan starts to transform appeared unedited in the Ocean dub's "Rock the Dragon" theme, likely due to absence of context.)
  • All parts displaying Gohan's nudity when he reverts from his Great Ape form are mostly cut out; there is one shot that is zoomed in where Goku holds Gohan's body as he glares up at Turles, although Gohan's private parts are still awkwardly shown. A bush is digitally painted in over Gohan's private parts in one scene.

These edits were left out when Pioneer Entertainment (now NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan) acquired the rights to the film and released it uncut with its own dub by Ocean in 1998.
