Edgar Ott was a German actor and voice actor. From time to time he also took over as director.

Biography[]

Edgar Ott's acting career began at Berlin's Hebbel-Theater, where he also attended drama school. From the early 1950s onwards, he was a member of the cast of the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin (Berlin State Theatre) for more than 30 years. From 1975 to 1979, Ott played one of the leading roles in 39 episodes of the ARD crime series Kommissariat 9.

During his professional career, it was, above all, his voice that became famous. In the dubbing studio, Ott not only provided well-known foreign colleagues such as Telly Savalas, Bill Cosby, and Gordon Jackson with his German voice but also popular cartoon characters. His voice can be heard in numerous Disney films, such as in The Jungle Book, the redub of Lady and the Tramp, The Aristocats, and Robin Hood. He additionally would take over the role of Krümelmonster (Cookie Monster) on Sesamstraße after Alexander Welbat's death in 1977.

One of his best-known audio play roles, participating in 312 of them, was that of the talking elephant Benjamin Blümchen, who he voiced from 1977 until his death. He also portrayed the role in several animated shorts and a series.

Edgar Ott was married to the actress Liane Croon. He died of a heart attack while walking his dog at the age of 64. He found his final resting place in the cemetery of the island church of St. Severin in Keitum on the island of Sylt.

Many of Edgar Ott's roles, including Benjamin Blümchen, were taken over by Jürgen Kluckert after his death. Douglas Welbat, the son of Alexander Welbat, would take over Krümelmonster.
