Censorship[]
In a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film features an openly gay superhero, Phastos, who is shown raising a son and sharing a kiss with his husband Ben.
This caused Eternals to be banned from screening in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is illegal (except in the former[note 1]). In Kuwait and Qatar, it was also due to the film's depictions of gods and prophets, which these countries consider blasphemous. The film, however, did release in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates, albeit in a heavily censored format which cut all scenes of romance and intimacy, whether heterosexual or homosexual. The same-sex kiss was also cut by Marvel for the film's release in Indonesia. Eternals would end up being the last film The Walt Disney Company would agree to censor for foreign markets.
Eternals was also banned in China, but for a different reason: the film's director Chloé Zhao had made remarks critical of the country in an 2013 interview, calling it "a place where there are lies everywhere". Her comments resurfacing online in 2021 prior to the film's release resulted in the Chinese government blacklisting Zhao and banning her films, including Eternals and Nomadland.
Footnotes[]
- ↑ Bahrain decriminalized homosexuality in 1976, but the country uses vaguely-defined morality and indecency laws to harass LGBT people and restrict their freedom of expression.
