Gandhi is a 1982 epic biographical film based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, a key figure in the Indian independence movement against the British Empire in the twentieth century. The film was a co-production between India and the United Kingdom, directed and produced by Richard Attenborough from a script by John Briley. It stars Ben Kingsley as the title role. The biographical film follows Gandhi's life from a key moment in 1893 when he gets kicked from a South African train for being in a whites-only compartment to his assassination and funeral in 1948. Although Gandhi was a practicing Hindu, his acceptance of other faiths, particularly Christianity and Islam, is highlighted.

Columbia Pictures released Gandhi in India on November 30, 1982. The picture saw its wide release in the United Kingdom on February 17, 1983 and in the United States on February 25, previous showings in both countries had already occured in December of 1982. It was lauded for offering a historically realistic depiction of Gandhi's life, the Indian freedom fight, and the negative effects of British imperialism on India. Its production values, costume design, and Kingsley's performance gained international acclaim. It was a commercial triumph, generating $127.8 million from a $22 million budget. Gandhi got eleven nominations for the 55th Academy Awards, winning eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (Kingsley). The British Film Institute designated it as the 34th best British film of the twentieth century.
