Gerd Duwner (aka Gerry Duwner) was a German actor and voice actor.
Biography[]

Duwner and Udo Schenk, being directed by Rainer Gerlach.
Duwner completed his classical acting training in Berlin. Despite early appearances at the Stralsunder Theater (Stralsund theatre), Berlin remained his artistic home, where he received engagements at various theatres. From 1955, Duwner worked increasingly in the dubbing of foreign-language films and remained one of the most sought-after voice actors until his death. The Deutsche Synchronkartei (German dubbing register) lists over 2000 dubbing jobs for Duwner.
With his high, roughened and slightly squeaky voice, Gerd Duwner became the voice actor for numerous comedians. These include Ned Beatty, Danny DeVito, Oliver Hardy (in later dubs) and Chico Marx. Duwner was also the standard voice actor for Mickey Rooney.
One of his most well known roles was dubbing Ernie on Sesame Street from Sesamstraße's inception until his death. His voice was so closely associated with Ernie, that, in January 1996, when original Ernie & Bert Muppets were stolen from a touring exhibit in Erfurt, he made a radio appeal asking for the puppets' safe return. Six weeks later, they would be recovered and returned.
Gerd Duwner died of liver cancer in a hospital in Berlin on May 10th, 1996 at the age of 70. His grave is in the Eythstraße cemetery in the Schöneberg district of Berlin.
After his death, some of his dubbing roles were taken over by Michael Habeck. This includes Barney Rubble, Charles Durning, Ernie, and Oliver Hardy.
