Goodfellas (stylized as GoodFellas) is an American gangster film from 1990, directed by Martin Scorsese, produced by Irwin Winkler and co-written by Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi. The film is based on Pileggi's nonfiction book Wiseguy, published in 1985, and depicts the rise and fall of Mob collaborator Henry Hill, as well as his friends and family, between 1955 and 1980.
Goodfellas made its debut at the 47th Venice International Film Festival on September 9, 1990, where Scorsese was awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director. The picture made $47 million on a $25 million budget and received significant acclaim upon its release; Rotten Tomatoes calls it "arguably the high point of Martin Scorsese's career". The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, winning one for Best Supporting Actor. At the BAFTAs, the film won five awards, including Best Picture.
Many people regard Goodfellas as one of the best films ever made. The United States Library of Congress designated it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2000, citing its "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" status. The film has been the subject of imitation and parody in many forms of media.
