Gremlins is a 1984 American comedic horror film directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus, and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, and Frances Lee McCain. Howie Mandel voices Gizmo, the main mogwai character. It is based on traditions about mischievous critters that create malfunctions—"gremlins"—in the British Royal Air Force dating back to World War II. The plot revolves around young Billy Peltzer, who is given a weird creature as a pet, which eventually spawns other creatures that evolve into aggressive, imp-like monsters that wreak havoc on Billy's town on Christmas Eve.

The film was the focus of extensive merchandising efforts, and it opts for black comedy set against a Christmas backdrop. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer for the picture, which was produced by Michael Finnell.

Warner Bros. released Gremlins in theaters on June 8, 1984, to critical and commercial acclaim. However, it received harsh criticism for some of its more violent parts. In response to this and similar complaints about Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spielberg proposed that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) change its rating system, which it accomplished within two months of the film's premiere, resulting in a new PG-13 rating. Gremlins 2: The New Batch, a sequel, was released in 1990.
