Hook is a 1991 American fantasy adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by James V. Hart and Malia Scotch Marmo. It stars Robin Williams as Peter Banning / Peter Pan, Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell, Bob Hoskins as Mr. Smee, Maggie Smith as Granny Wendy, and Charlie Korsmo as Jack Banning. It is a modern-day sequel to J. M. Barrie's 1911 novel Peter and Wendy, following an adult Peter Pan who has forgotten his boyhood due to his high-powered life. In his new life, he is known as Peter Banning, a successful but career-driven lawyer with a wife (Wendy's granddaughter) and two children. However, when his old rival, Captain Hook, kidnaps his children, he goes to Neverland to save them. Throughout the voyage, he reclaims memories from his past and achieves complete emotional maturity.
In the early 1980s, Spielberg collaborated with Walt Disney Productions and Paramount Pictures to develop Hook. It would have followed the Peter Pan storyline from the 1924 silent picture and the 1953 animated Disney feature. It began pre-production in 1985, but Spielberg abandoned it. Hart worked on the script with filmmaker Nick Castle and TriStar Pictures before Spielberg decided to direct in 1989. It was filmed nearly entirely on soundstages at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.
Hook, which was released on December 11, 1991, garnered mixed reviews from critics. They complimented the performances (particularly those of Williams and Hoffman), John Williams' musical score, and the film's production values, but criticized the plot and tone. The film also garnered five nominations for the 64th Academy Awards. Although it was a commercial success, its box-office revenue was smaller than anticipated. Hook has garnered a sizable cult following since it was first released, and many consider it a classic.
