I Know What You Did Last Summer is a 1997 horror film, written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie. Based partially on Lois Duncan's 1973 novel, it is the first entry in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise. The film follows four young adult friends who are pursued by a killer armed with a hook, one year after covering up a vehicle accident in which they believed to have murdered a person. It is also influenced by the urban legend the Hook as well as the slasher movies Prom Night (1980) and The House on Sorority Row (1982).
Producer Erik Feig approached Williamson about adapting Duncan's original novel. Whereas the previous year's Scream featured strong satirical and self-referential aspects, Williamson's script for I Know What You Did Last Summer altered the novel's basic premise to resemble a simple 1980s-era slasher film.
On October 17, 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer was released in theaters across the United States. It earned mixed reviews from critics but was an economic success, generating $125.3 million worldwide on a $17 million budget and remaining in first place at the U.S. box office for three weeks in a row. The film was spoofed in Scary Movie (2000) and is widely mentioned in popular culture, along with Scream, for reviving slasher films in the 1990s.
The film was followed by I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in 1998 and a 2006 standalone direct-to-video sequel, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Sony Pictures is set to release a direct legacy sequel to the first two films on July 18, 2025, following a television series adaption that premiered on Amazon Prime in 2021.
