Im Westen nichts Neues is a German epic anti-war film from 2022, based on Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 novel. It is the third cinematic adaptation of the novel and the first German one, following the 1930 and 1979 versions. Edward Berger co-wrote, directed, and produced the film, which stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, and Devid Striesow.
Set during World War I, it tells the story of Paul Bäumer, an idealistic young German soldier. Bäumer's early aspirations of becoming a hero are dashed when he and his fellow students enlist in the German Army and are forced to face the harsh reality of war while trying to live. The film includes a parallel storyline that does not appear in the novel, following the armistice negotiations to end the war.
Im Westen nichts Neues debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022, and was available for viewing on Netflix on October 28. The film garnered excellent reviews for its timely anti-war message, while many critics were divided on the film's fidelity to Remarque's source material and saw it as "Oscar bait." It got 14 nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards (winning seven, including Best Film) and nine at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, winning four: Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design, respectively. It received twelve nominations for the 2023 German Film Awards and won eight, including the Silver Award, for being the second best picture.
