Knights of the Zodiac is one of several English dubs of 聖闘士星矢. This was the first English dub of the series (alongside the uncut ADV dub), produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment in association with DIC Entertainment Corporation and premiered on Cartoon Network in the United States on August 20, 2003, 14 years after the show originally ended.

History

ADV Films announced that they would distribute the series in North America for the first time in 2002. A year later, it was revealed that the company acquired the North American video rights from DiC Entertainment, who purchased the rights from Toei Animation for North America and Oceania. DiC sold 40 out of the 60 episodes of the show that they licensed to Cartoon Network in the US, and commissioned Canada-based Kaleidoscope Entertainment to produce the dub. The dub was recorded at Wanted! Post Production and featured a Toronto-based talent pool similar to other DiC shows that they produced, distributed and licensed at that time. This was not the first time the show reached American soil, as Puerto Rican television station WAPA-TV aired the Latin American Spanish dub of the show, fully uncut, uncensored and in its entirety from 1996 to 2010, seven years before it reached the rest of the country, and Canada. Cartoon Network would cancel the show sometime in 2004 due to low ratings but YTV in Canada aired all 40 episodes in its entirety.

Censorship

In order for the show to target children, fighting sequences were tone down and all scenes featuring blood were re-colored to either green or blue.

Trivia

• This dub only covers the first half of the Sanctuary arc.
• This is one of two shows produced in-house at Toei Animation that DiC (which mainly used them among many others for animation services during the 1980s) ever licensed from them, the other one being Sailor Moon.
