Censorship[]

Notably, the film includes an on-screen same-sex kiss between Alisha Hawthorne and her wife Kiko. The scene was initially omitted from the film during its production, but by mid-March 2022 it had been reinstated into the film, following an uproar from various Pixar employees over The Walt Disney Company's weak response to the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act (disparagingly nicknamed the "Don't Say Gay" bill by its detractors), as well as allegations that Disney outright censored LGBTQ themes within Pixar's own movies.[3]

The scene's reinstatment resulted in the film getting banned from screening in Bahrain, Brunei, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates, after Disney refused to cut the scene as requested by local censors.[4][5][6] In Türkiye, the film was scheduled to release in theaters on June 7, 2022, but it was delayed to September 2nd before being pulled from the schedule indefinitely.[7] It was also banned in Kazakhstan for the same reasons after the country's Culture and Sports Minister responded to complaints from local conservative and religious groups,[8][9] despite the film's official Russian dub being produced in said country.

The aforementioned kiss scene also caused Lightyear to be omitted (along with Baymax!) from Disney+ in Arab countries,[10] despite the fact that full Egyptian and Standard Arabic dubs were produced.[11] However, it was later released uncensored on Disney+ Hotstar in Indonesia and Malaysia in August 2022 along with the film's Indonesian and Malay dubs.[12] While the film was ultimately not released in Türkiye and China, full Turkish and Chinese Mandarin dubs were still produced nonetheless, and released on Disney+ outside of these countries in August 2022 for the former and sometime in 2023 for the latter.
