This article is about the Croatian HRT 2 dub. For the Slovene Minimax dub, see here.

Moj mali poni: Prijateljstvo je čarobno is one of several Croatian dubs of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Following the 2011 demo dub, it first premiered on HRT 2 in November 2014, with every episode being cut into two parts for television broadcast, doubling the number of episodes. It was shown early mornings on the channel, during the Ju-hu-hu! block. The second and final season aired in 2017.

This dub, produced by Novi Mediji, was notorious mostly for its poor audio editing, mixing, and adaptation. Additionally, audio samples and some of the script are taken directly from the two Serbian dubs, mainly Oblakoder's dub for Mini Ultra - with a voiceover for any words different between Serbian and Croatian in the samples - which is seen throughout various instances. Some episodes of the first season were released on DVDs in Croatia.

A new Croatian dub would later be produced by Livada Produkcija, and premiered in 2017 on RTL Kockica.

Broadcast[]

The series premiered on December 8, 2014 on HRT 2 with the Croatian dub by Novi Mediji, Zagreb. The first season aired daily. It was then reran on weekdays from July 7 to September 14, 2015, and daily from July 7, 2016. The second season started in November 2016 on weekdays, except Tuesdays. It was reran every day from October 22, 2017, and again from February 9, 2019, except weekdays. Finally, on April 22 of the same year, reruns ceased of the dub.

Cast[]

The episodes use excerpts of the Mini Serbian version, retaining the Serbian names of the characters and voice actors as a result. Some additional discrepancies can be found between the list presented below and the actual dubbing, where random lines were sometimes said by the wrong actors. All singing for female characters was done by Andrea Baković unless specified someone else.

Notes[]

  • This dub is incomplete; only the first two seasons were dubbed. Some of the cast would still reprise their roles with the Croatian dub of the 2017 film, although it was produced by another studio.
  • While most of Scootaloo's lines were taken from the Serbian Mini dub in "Call of the Cutie", the ones that were dubbed into Croatian were done by a male voice actor.
  • The 'male' vocals present in "Smile Song" and "The Heart Carol" are performed by Andrea Baković wit her voice pitched down, instead of an actual male singer.
  • When airing on HRT 2, each episode was split in half, using localised "To be continued" and "Previously on My Little Pony" title cards. The second half featured a custom recap, which were consistently made of clip montages and a narrator. This format was changed in the middle of the second season (beginning with "The Last Roundup"), ditching the clip montages entirely, and replacing them with the given episodes' prologues, while leaving the narrator in. This caused problems with the narration and the regular character dialogue playing over each other.
    • In season 1, after the "To Be Continued" title card, the credits from "Friendship Is Magic, Part 1" would play no matter what episode it was. Season 2 is the same but with "The Return of Harmony, Part 2."
    • On DVD, episodes were released in their entirety instead of split in two, so they did not have recaps and the insertos that said Part 1 and Part 2 were muted, including the end of the theme song underneath.[3]
  • It is unknown if Novi Mediji had permission from Oblakoder to use samples of their Serbian dub, or if they were used without authorisation.
  • Parts of the Serbian Mini dub were heard in "A Dog and Pony Show" despite the aforementioned dub of that episode never fully airing; however, for "Sweet and Elite" and "A Canterlot Wedding" - the other two unaired episodes from that dub - audio samples are taken from and scripts are based on Studio Studio's Serbian dub for Minimax instead.

Errors[]

  • This dub contains a lot of audio mixing errors:
    • Some lines of dialogue are either too short, too long, or in the wrong place. Lines that are too short tend to be looped or filled in with something unrelated, while lines that are too long either are cut off, clip out of lip-syncing, audibly overlap with the next line or even replace it entirely. In more severe cases it leads to missing dialogue, whether it be in form of empty air or a completely different recording somehow replacing the intended one, such as "A Bird In The Hoof" suffering from Fluttershy's singing being replaced by spoken dialogue, "The Show Stoppers" having two instances of blatantly missing dialogue, Mulia Mild in "MMMystery On The Friendship Express" saying "But how?" in Gustave le Grand's voice twice instead of "Why are we all here again?" and the brown dragon in "Dragon Quest" saying "You sure your name is Spike and not Shrimp?" and "I think he's Crackle's cousin" in another dragon's voice instead of "You look more like peewee to me" and "You fly on your mommy's back during migration?", respectively.
    • Sound effects sometimes play randomly, even when they have no place at the timestamp they're playing on. One example is a magical blast sound effect playing while Mayor Mare is holding a speech in "The Last Roundup".
    • The in-episode recap from "A Canterlot Wedding Part 2" consists of randomly arranged voice recordings instead of those that should be playing (said voice recordings aren't supposed to be there, because they came from different scenes), leading to nonsensical dialogue.
  • There are many errors within the first two episodes alone:
    • In the opening segment, the narrator does not speak her lines fast enough, causing the narration to go out of sync with the visuals - for instance, when the Elements of Harmony appear, the narrator speaks about Nightmare Moon's vow instead of name-dropping the Elements, only doing so at the end of the sequence where Celestia banishes Nightmare Moon. In addition, the narration also directly overlaps with Twilight speaking, and makes a claim that the remaining princess took responsibility for "both herself and the sun".
    • When Twilight meets Fluttershy, the latter audibly says her name instead of muffling it beyond recognition, but Twilight's lines about not hearing her well are kept in.
    • There is a voice clip of Twilight making a nondescript "Euuugh" sound, and it plays in places where it doesn't make sense, but doesn't play where it was likely intended (when Twilight spits out an apple).
    • The studio-made recaps are mixed up. The recap from second half of the first episode makes a claim that Twilight and her friends are "still searching for their princess" and that "Nightmare Moon set up a plethora of traps for them" even though Twilight hadn't met all of her soon-to-be friends yet, essentially spoiling the upcoming plot, while the recap from the first half of the second episode likewise claims that "preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration are still underway" despite the fact the celebration had just been held. As well, the second erroneous studio-made recap is immediately followed by the real recap.
    • In the second episode, not only are there lines that needlessly loop like in many other episodes, one of them loops uncleanly. When Applejack asks Twilight if the latter knows what's going on and her line loops due to being too short, there's a clear sign of trimming at the loop point.
    • When Pinkie Pie meets Twilight a second time and tells her story, her voice actor doesn't speak her lines at the intended speed, instead doing it at a slower rate like in the narration sequence. As a result, Pinkie's speech is too lengthy and clips far out of her lip-syncing, overlapping with Applejack's line and ending long after she was supposed to stop talking.
  • There are various moments of misnaming characters, particularly as a result of taking from the Mini Serbian dub in most songs and later episodes; for example, in the Croatian dub of "Art of the Dress" Applejack gets referred to as "Jabuklina" even though her name is "Ivka", and Fluttershy as "Tihana" when it's actually "Plahuljica", and so on. Those names are correct in the Mini Serbian dub, but not in the Croatian dub.
    • Despite Applejack's established name being "Ivka", she is referred to as "Jabučica" (Apple Bloom's name from thr Serbian Mini dub) in some episodes.
  • In "May the Best Pet Win!", Rainbow Dash initially meets Tank; at first, she calls him a turtle (being correct by the original script), but in the very next sentence she calls him a tortoise, to which Fluttershy redundantly remarks that he is a tortoise.
    • Also in the same episode, Tank is referred to as a female at first, and then as a male near the end of the episode.
  • In the studio-made recap at the beginning of the second half of the episode "Return of Harmony Part 2", the narrator says that Applejack found the Elements of Harmony and attempted to use them, instead of Twilight Sparkle. Applejack at that point was shown as corrupted, and was secondary focus. This was most likely due to confusion of the names "Iskra" and "Ivka."
  • The song "Love Is In Bloom" is sung to the lyrics (based on the Mini Serbian version) of "The Success Song", which is a song completely unrelated to the former, and comes from the third season of the show, which was not dubbed. As well as that, the instrumental track is doubled and the duplicate track is off-sync.
  • In some songs, the translated lyrics make no grammatical sense, such as some lines in "Art of the Dress" which mean "Every insisting is very important" and "It may all mean tiresome."
  • Some songs play where they should not:
    • The "Welcome Song" is replaced with "Smile Song."
  • Princess Cadance's Croatian name was localized as Kadenca. While it is ultimately correct, the name is pronounced exactly the same as "Cadenza", from her full name, Princess Mi Amore Cadenza; when Twilight Sparkle learns about the wedding, she does not recognize Cadance's full name, but does recognize her shorter name. Cadance's localized short name removed the distinction between her two names, which makes it seem as if Twilight should have recognized the full name.
  • In "Bridle Gossip", Fluttershy is supposed to speak in a deep, masculine voice after being affected, but when she says "I don't know, seems awfully dangerous", she says it in her normal voice. And when she says "You made me sound ridiculous", not only does she not say it in a masculine voice, she says it in Pinkie Pie's voice.
  • In "Hearts and Hooves Day", Big Mac's localized name ("Veliki Brat", or "Big Brother") creates a problem when he begins interacting with Cheerilee in a romantic way. Namely, when Cheerilee directly addresses Big Mac via his localized name, she sounds like she's calling him her brother and thus it creates an implication of incestual romance, even when it should be clear that Cheerilee and Big Mac are unrelated to one another and not brother and sister.
  • In episode 3, the samples from the Serbian Mini dub are absent which means that Ana Milenković's vocals from the theme song are missing.[4] "The Ticket Song" also has no vocals, which is likely for this reason as well.
  • In episode 14, Twilight Sparkle calls the Canis Major constellation the Ursa Major and compares it to the Ursa Minor, when the constellation shown on-screen is neither of the Ursas.[5] The exact same mistake happens in the Serbian Mini dub[6] that the Croatian script was copied from.
  • Part 2 of episode 4 "Applebuck Season" is mistakenly given the title of episode 5 "Griffin the Brush Off".[7][8] A voice also randomly says "Velika Berba Jabuka" at the very beginning shot of the episode, which is the localized title of this episode's Serbian Mini dub,[9] from which this dub takes bits of.
  • Pinkie Pie's rendition and Fluttershy's renditions of "Evil Enchantress" don't match; the former consists of just "She's evil", "She plays an evil game" and "La la la la la la", while the latter is an excerpt from the Serbian Mini version edited to be shorter and looped several times.
  • The intro sequence after the studio-made recap at the beginning of the second half of "Secret of My Excess" is almost entirely replaced by footage from before the intro (ending on a brief shot of Twilight's hot air balloon before resuming where it left off), only leaving the opening theme audio playing over it.
  • In "The Mysterious Mare Do Well", when Rainbow Dash tells Scootaloo to wait up, she refers to her using a second-person plural, which, in Croatian, is only used when formally addressing someone (like a boss or a teacher) and if there is more than one person.
  • The episode "Sonic Rainboom" has three errors:
    • The pony who says "I could watch you fly all day" is a female, but refers to herself as a male, since Croatian is a gender-specific language.
    • And before that, the pony who suggests that Rarity enter the competition instead also says "I could watch you fly all day", also referring to herself as a male. Despite her line being different, Rarity still says "Maybe I should enter", which now doesn't make any sense since no one suggested the idea of her entering in the first place.
    • One scene has missing dialogue.
  • In "Family Appreciation Day", Granny Smith's Alphabet song remains the same as in the English version despite the Croatian alphabet containing extra letters, and as a result several letters are missing in the alphabet.
  • In "The Cutie Pox", when Apple Bloom speaks French, Katarina Perica Kirin mispronounces "je parle français" (I speak French) as "j'ai parlé français" (I spoke French), creating nonsensical dialogue as Apple Bloom speaks in past tense while being actively afflicted with the cutie pox that had caused her to speak in French.
  • "The Last Roundup"
    • Derpy/Muffins is referred to as a male by Rainbow Dash, although she's still voiced by a female voice actor.
    • While Derpy/Muffins is complimenting Rainbow Dash, she also says "Oops" right before crashing into a wall beam (which coupled with the sentence's tone makes it sound like she did it on purpose).
    • During the parts where Rainbow Dash dodges the lightning and groans right before telling Derpy to be careful, she says "Yeah" from her reply to Derpy/Muffins saying she doesn't understand how it could happen.
    • The line where Rainbow tells Derpy/Muffins to sit down and do nothing is partially looped, ending in "No, no way!"
    • Mayor Mare's speech at the beginning is in slightly lower audio quality, making it seem as if the Mayor is talking through a megaphone.
    • Right after Mayor Mare's first sentence, a magical blast sound effect plays even though no instance of magic usage occurs at that time.
    • Pinkie Pie's speech as Applejack is about to board the train is too long, still playing even as Pinkie is busy eating candy and overlapping with Twilight's line a little.
    • Apple Bloom's farewell while Applejack is boarding the train is replaced by one of Applejack's previously recorded lines, saying "Of course, mayor!".
    • Applejack's line where she says "See you in 7 days" as the train departs is chorused.
    • After the train leaves, Twilight's groan is replaced by an instance of Rainbow saying "Yeah" from earlier.
    • Rainbow's rant about not wanting to go home empty-hooved overlaps with Fluttershy's line after.
    • Before Applejack declares she'll tell everything at breakfast, her sigh is that of Fluttershy's.
    • Rainbow's "Yeah, maybe" is partially looped.
    • Pinkie Pie's "Nopony breaks a Pinkie Promise" is replaced by a nondescript drawn out gasp followed by "Are you-".
  • "It's About Time"
    • After the intro theme during the second half, there's a video editing error where the first three seconds of the actual episode are inserted before the second half, leading to a case where the sunrise at the beginning is shown for a short time before abruptly cutting to Spike and Twilight walking towards "Madame" Pinkie's tent.
    • The recap during the second half mentions that Twilight finds out "she's only been driving herself crazy", essentially revealing that there's no disaster to begin with and thus spoiling the plot twist.
    • During Twilight's initial encounter with her future self, she exclaims that her future self is scientifically possible right after saying what just happened isn't. This is corrected the second time around, where her past self now says the correct translation.
  • "Dragon Quest"
    • After the intro theme during the second half, there's a video editing error where the first three seconds of the actual episode are inserted before the second half, leading to a case where the beginning scene with the burrow is briefly shown before abruptly cutting to a gang of dragons cheering (which is also quickly followed by a scene transition from the original episode, practically putting two transitions within less than 5 seconds).
    • Starting from this episode and lasting for the rest of the season, Rarity and Rainbow Dash both get voiced by the same person as Twilight Sparkle. As a result, Twilight's remark about their fake dragon cover possibly being blown due to three different voices coming from it is a minor plot hole due to all three of them sounding too identical for the argument to make sense.
    • When Spike finally enters the Dragon Lands, an unknown male voice says "Dobrodošao u dolinu zmajeva...".

Adaptations[]

  • In "Applebuck Season":
    • When Pinkie Pie is asking a tired Applejack to get the ingredients, they're translated as "čokoladne mrvice" (chocolate chips), "prašak za pecivo" (baking powder), "šalica brašna" (a cup of flour), and "šalica šarenih mrva" (a cup of colorful sprinkles). Respectively, Applejack mishears as "grickalice" (snacks), "pivo" (beer), "limuna strašna" (lemon juice), and "vrtni crvi" (garden worms). Applejack's "fancy talk for earthworms" remark also became "Oh, this will be one strange cake!"
    • The help/kelp joke is translated as Twilight telling Applejack that the latter needs help (pomoć), which Applejack mishears as "midnight" (ponoć), leading her to protest that it's the middle of the day.
  • In "The Last Roundup":
    • "Chimicherry" and "Cherrychanga" are translated as "Palatrešnja" and "Trešnjačinka", respectively; plays on the words "trešnja" (cherry) and "palačinka" (pancake).
  • In "Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000":
    • Cider is referred to as juice (even though the dub had previously added alcohol references where they were not in the original) in the Flim Flam Brothers song, while the rest of the episode refers to it as "jabukovača", which can refer to both the alcoholic variant and regular juice, as well as apple pie.
  • Ponyville was first translated as "Ponigrad", but changed to "Ponijevo" near the end of season 2.
