Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (also known as Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood and Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood) is a 2019 comedy-drama film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Columbia Pictures, Bona Film Group, Heyday Films, and Visiona Romantica co-produced the film, which was distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It stars a large ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Set in 1969 Los Angeles, the film follows a fading actor and his stunt double as they navigate the quickly changing film industry, all as the specter of the Tate murders looms overhead. The film offers "multiple storylines in a modern fairy tale tribute to the final moments of Hollywood's golden age."
It is the first Tarantino picture not to feature Bob and Harvey Weinstein, after Tarantino stopped his collaboration with the brothers following sexual assault claims against the latter. After a bidding war, Sony Pictures released the film, meeting Tarantino's demands, including final edit rights. Pitt, DiCaprio, Robbie, Kurt Russell, and others joined the cast from January to June 2018. From June to November, principal photography took place in and around Los Angeles. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the final film starring Luke Perry, who died on March 4, 2019, and is dedicated to his memory.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2019, and hit theaters in the United States on July 26, 2019, and the United Kingdom on August 14. Critics praised Tarantino's direction and writing, performances (particularly those of DiCaprio and Pitt), cinematography, soundtrack, sound design, costume design, and production values. It made $374 million worldwide. The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute ranked Once Upon a Time in Hollywood among the top 10 films of 2019. At the 92nd Academy Awards, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood garnered 10 nominations, two of which it won, as well as numerous additional prizes.
