After an initial vocation to the priesthood, he left the seminary and entered an engineering school, a path he abandoned in turn: he wanted to be an actor. While taking lessons at the Cours Simon, he made his theatrical debut in the late 1940s, before moving into film, radio dramas and soap operas, and cabaret in the 1950s.

He appeared in numerous successful films, plays and TV series. At the end of the 1950s, he was offered a trial role, after which he was entrusted with the French dubbing of Peter Lorre in La Belle de Moscou. His amusing timbre and ability to transform his voice naturally drew him to animation, notably Disney productions, Hanna Barbera and Warner. He also lends his voice to actors such as Jack Lemmon, Benny Hill and characters like C-3PO in Star Wars or Hercule Poirot.
From December 2010, wishing to slow down considerably (with a few rare exceptions) for health reasons, he suggested that dubbing companies replace him in some of his iconic roles with his friend Jean-Claude Donda (as Winnie the Pooh, Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter, C3PO in Star Wars, among others). He retired soon after and only returned to the studio to reprise the role of Asterix for one last time in 2014's Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods.
In January 2012, he was awarded the Prix Henri-Langlois for his body of work.
He has written an autobiographical book: J'avoue que j'ai bien rire.
After seven years of frail health, Roger Carel passed away on September 11, 2020, aged 93. In accordance with his last wishes, his funeral took place in the strictest family privacy in the Paris region, and he now rests beside his parents in Aigre-Villejésus, Charente.
In mid-October, Dubbing Brothers paid tribute to him by renaming one of its studios Auditorium Roger Carel.
