Some Like It Hot is an American criminal comedy film from 1959, directed, produced, and written by Billy Wilder. The script by Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond is based on Robert Thoeren and Michael Logan's screenplay for the 1935 French film Fanfare of Love. The film follows two musicians who disguise themselves as women in order to flee Chicago mobsters, after witnessing them commit murder during the Prohibition era.
Some Like It Hot debuted to critical and financial success and is regarded as one of the best films of all time. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won Best Costume Design. In 1989, the Library of Congress chose it as one of the first 25 films to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Because it includes cross-dressing, the film was not approved by the Motion Picture Production Code (Hays Code). The code's reach has gradually shrunk since the early 1950s, owing to increased social tolerance for taboo issues in film, but it was nonetheless enforced until the mid-1960s. Some Like It Hot's tremendous success is cited as one of the reasons for the code's retirement.
