Censorship[]

The Turner EMEA master edits are used on both Cartoon Network and Max. Additionally, some dialogue was also notably altered in the Swedish dub.

Some of the edits shared with other EMEA dubs (as well as the EMEA English version) include:

  • In "Steven's Lion":
    • Ronaldo exclaiming, "Steven's pregnant?!" was cut out, cutting directly to "I have a giant pet lion right outside.".
    • Ronaldo's line, "I bet you're not even pregnant." was muted. However, his mouth can still be seen to move.
  • In "Island Adventure", Lars and Sadie's fist bump and hug scene from the song "Be Wherever You Are" was shortened to remove the part where Lars shoves Steven away.
  • In "The Return", in the scene where Garnet is poofed, her visor and body snapping and breaking was cut. After she gets shocked, it cuts straight to her poof cloud.
    • Despite the censorship in this episode, during the flashback in "Full Disclosure", Garnet breaking up was not censored.
  • In "Earthlings", the part where Smoky Quartz kicks Jasper in the face was shortened, with some frames of the precise moment when Jasper gets hit removed.

The Swedish dub also specifically altered dialogue in the episode "Hit the Diamond" in an attempt to tone down Ruby and Sapphire's romantic affection toward each other:

  • Lapis saying that Ruby and Sapphire were "flirting" was changed to her saying that the two were "teaching"/"learning"/"instructing" ("De lära.") in the Swedish dub. In the Danish dub, she instead says that the two were "having a good time" ("De hygger."), but the Norwegian dub instead translated the line faithfully.
  • Sapphire saying "I'm trying, but all I wanna look at is you" to Ruby and the latter responding with "Don't worry. You can look at me when you're running for home" was changed in the Swedish dub. Instead, Sapphire says, "I'm attempting; I have problems with concentration" (Jag försöker; jag har problemer med koncentrationen) and Ruby says, "No danger. Focus on the circle when you jump around" (Inget fara. Fokusera på cirkeln när du springer runt). Notably, the Danish and Norwegian dubs, which have aired on the same channel simultaneously, translated this scene more faithfully.
  • Although no scenes were omitted from the episode, the alteration of dialogue in this episode in the Swedish dub was still controversial nonetheless.
  • Despite the dialogue alterations in this episode, later episodes, including "Reunited", did not attempt to downplay Ruby and Sapphire's relationship.

Additionally, the airing time was moved to nighttime on weekends on the former Cartoon Network Nordic, allegedly due to the fact that the series tackles LGBTQ themes. For this same reason, the Swedish dub had attempted to censor many of these themes between the characters by changing the dialogue when possible,[2][3] though this mainly tended to occur in earlier episodes. For example, in the song "Stronger Than You", when Garnet sings "I can see you hate the way we intermingle / But I think you're just mad 'cause you're single", this is translated in Swedish as "If the shame you feel makes you angry / It doesn't matter, because you get the whipping" (in Swedish: "Om skammen som du känner gör dig ilsken / spelar ingen roll, för du får pisken"). However, the Swedish dub completely stopped attempting to censor the show's LGBTQ themes later on in its runtime.

Notes[]

  • In the song "Love Like You", the "Adore You" part was replaced by the version heard on Full Disclosure (in fact, it was layered on top of the instrumental of "Adore You"). The "Right By You" part was replaced by the version heard on Full Disclosure.
  • This dub had issues with consistency, as character names and location names would change episode by episode. Sometimes the characters would be referred to by their English names: for instance, Garnet has been referred to by at least three names; her regular localized name Granat, her original English name, and sometimes even "Granit". Ditto for Pearl, who has been referred to by her localized name Pärlan, her original English name, and even "Pärla".
    • The songs would often be translated literally as well. In the song "Full Disclosure" for example, Steven sings about how everyone has told him gem stuff's dangerous. In the dub, it is translated directly as "...stones are dangerous" (stenar är farligt), which is not what Steven was referring to.
    • The Crystal Gems are sometimes referred to as "Kristallväktarna" instead of "Kristallstenarna".
    • In the "Say Uncle" episode, when Uncle Grandpa appears he correctly introduces himself as "Farbror Farfar", in line with what the Swedish dub of that show calls him. However the Crystal Gems often refer to him as "Farbror Morfar", despite him introducing himself to them correctly.
