The Addams Family is a 1991 American supernatural black comedy film based on the characters from Charles Addams' cartoon and the 1964 television series produced by David Levy. The film, directed by veteran cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld in his feature directorial debut, stars Anjelica Huston, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Morticia Addams, Raul Julia as Gomez Addams, and Christopher Lloyd as Fester Addams. The film follows a strange, macabre aristocratic family who reunite with someone they assume to be a long-lost relative, Gomez's brother Fester Addams.
The picture was notable for its chaotic production; originally developed at Orion, it ran $5 million over budget due to continuous rewrites throughout shooting; health difficulties of those involved in the movie; and an overall unpleasant filmmaking experience for Sonnenfeld himself, which resulted in numerous delays. The film's production costs increased from $25 million to $30 million, prompting Orion, which was struggling financially and fearful of another big-budget flop, to sell the film to Paramount, who completed it and handled domestic distribution, while Orion distributed it internationally through Columbia Pictures. The picture was commercially successful, recouping nearly seven times its production costs, and was followed by a sequel, Addams Family Values.
