The Amityville Horror is a 1980 American horror film by director Stuart Rosenberg. The film is about a young couple who buy a house that is plagued by belligerent spirits. It is based on Jay Anson's 1977 book of the same name, which recounted the Lutz family's purported paranormal experiences while temporarily residing in the home where Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his whole family in 1974. It is the first installment in the long-running Amityville Horror film franchise, which was remade in 2005.
The Amityville Horror made its international premiere on July 24, 1979, at the Museum of Modern Art, before opening in theaters three days later. The picture was a great commercial success and one of American International Pictures' most successful releases. It went on to earn nearly $80 million in North America, making it one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time, as well as one of the highest-grossing horror pictures in cinema history. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews at the time of release, composer Lalo Schifrin's musical score was nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award, while Margot Kidder received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress.
