The Breakfast Club is a 1985 American independent teen coming-of-age comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. Its cast includes Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleason, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy. The video follows five students from various high school cliques as they serve a Saturday detention overseen by their autocratic vice principal.
The Breakfast Club premiered in Los Angeles on February 7, 1985, and was distributed theatrically by Universal Pictures on February 15, 1985. It generated $51.5 million against a $1 million budget and received critical acclaim, with many considering it one of Hughes' most remembered and known works. The five principal actors in the film were thereafter referred to as members of the "Brat Pack" by the media. In 2015, the picture was digitally remastered and rereleased in 430 cinemas to commemorate its 30th anniversary.
The Library of Congress designated The Breakfast Club as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 2016.
