Thomas & Friends (originally titled Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends; retitled Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! during its last three seasons) is a British-Canadian children's television series that aired across 24 series from 9 October 1984 to 20 January 2021. Based on The Railway Series books by Rev. W. Awdry and his son Christopher, the series was developed for television by Britt Allcroft. The series follows the adventures of Thomas, an anthropomorphised blue steam locomotive on the fictional North Western Railway on the Island of Sodor, and several other anthropomorphised locomotives on the North Western Railway, including Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, and Toby. They work for the Fat Controller.
The production and the rights to the series are currently owned and produced by HIT Entertainment (a subsidiary of Mattel), which acquired Gullane Entertainment in July 2002. The CGI series was produced and animated by two Canadian-based companies: Nitrogen Studios for series 13 to 16, and Arc Productions (later Jam Filled) for series 17 to 24.
A new 2D-animated series, Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, premiered on 13 September 2021 on Cartoon Network.

Thanks to the show's very own nature (having aired for a total of 3 decades and a half), its foreign distribution has been quite erratic over the years. On top of that, the program's format has been restructured and retitled multiple times. Notes
- Before the show received proper dubs in Italian or European Spanish, the original English version briefly aired in Italy and Spain via the former Cartoon Network Europe starting in 1994. While the channel did air other programs that were dubbed in these languages, Thomas was not dubbed, most likely due to rights issues.
- Despite the show being of British origin, for unknown reasons from Hero of the Rails onward the American English dub would be treated as the official dub of the show and would be the one recorded first. All animation would be lip synced to the voice lines of that dub as evident from some production reels by Nitrogen Studios.[63][64] The British English version would be recorded after, with the actors having to sync their voices to match the syncing of the American English voices.
