Thomas Danneberg was a German actor, voice actor, voice director and writer for dubs. He was one of the most famous voice actors in Germany and is especially remembered as the German standard voice of Terence Hill, with whom he also had a friendship.

Biography[]

The son of an engineer and a housewife, Danneberg was born during the Second World War as the younger of two children. After attending Dreilinden-Gymnasium in Berlin-Nikolassee, Danneberg trained as a deep-sea fisherman in Iceland from 1959 to 1960. He then travelled to the USA for six months, where he lived in New York City and New Orleans to pursue his interest in jazz in particular. After his return, Danneberg initially worked as a light sailor in Norway before beginning his acting training at the Schauspielhaus Zürich (Zurich Theatre).

In 1962, he transferred to Marlise Ludwig's private drama school in Berlin and remained there until his graduation in 1964. Engagements at various theatres followed, his first experiences in front of the camera began in 1963.

Danneberg took on his first dubbing role for lead actor Keir Dullea in the US melodrama David and Lisa in 1964. In the decades that followed, he became one of the best-known and busiest voice actors in the German-speaking world. He soon became the standard dubbing voice for Dan Aykroyd, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, he also dubbed the latter two once in the same film, The Expendables.

In 2008, he met his future wife Leni, whom he married in 2017. He retired in April 2019 for health reasons. Thomas Danneberg died in Berlin in September 2023 at the age of 81 following a stroke.
