Tilly Lauenstein was a German actress of stage, screen and dubbing.
Biography[]
After attending school in Bad Homburg, Tilly Lauenstein went to Berlin and trained as an actress. She got her first theater role at the age of 18 in Stuttgart. She performed in numerous theaters and cities in Germany, including the Staatstheater Stuttgart (Stuttgart State Theatre) and the Schillertheater. However, she mainly acted in Berlin. After the Second World War, she was again given her first major role there, Marie in Georg Büchner's Woyzeck, directed by Wolfgang Langhoff at the Deutsches Theater (German Theatre).
Director Arthur Maria Rabenalt discovered her for film in 1948. She first shot Chemie und Liebe (Chemistry and love), an anti-capitalist boulevard piece in the style of screwball comedy, and Das Mädchen Christine (The girl Christine) for the East German DEFA. This was followed by offers for West German productions. Here she took on roles in dramas, comedies, thrillers, mystery and horror films. She is best known to television viewers of the 1960s from the series Der Forellenhof (The trout farm) and Alle meine Tiere (All my animals). Later in the 1980s, she appeared in the series Ravioli and Rivalen der Rennbahn (Rivals of the racetrack), among others.
Tilly Lauenstein was divorced and had a son, Detlef Lauenstein. Her grandson Jonas Lauenstein is also an actor. After suffering two strokes, she was still appearing in stage plays at the age of 80. “After my death, I will retire,” she said on her 80th birthday. She died on May 8, 2002 in Potsdam at the age of 85 and Tilly Lauenstein's final resting place was in the Wilmersdorf cemetery in Berlin.
