X is a 2022 American slasher film written, directed, produced and edited by Ti West. It stars Mia Goth in two roles: Maxine, a young woman, and Pearl, an elderly woman. Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi co-star in the film. The film, set in 1979, follows a cast and crew as they meet to film an erotic film on an old couple's remote Texas ranch, but are threatened by the homicidal pair.
A24 announced X in November 2020. The main photography took place from February 16 to March 16, 2021, largely in Fordell, New Zealand. Goth underwent intensive prosthetic makeup for Pearl, and visual effects were used to portray violent moments in the film. The film, described as a contemporary take on psycho-biddy, is inspired by horror, exploitation, and pornographic films, and it focuses on the relationship between beauty, age, and self-worth. Tyler Bates and Chelsea Wolfe composed the score.
X made its global premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 13, 2022, and was distributed theatrically in the United States on March 18, 2022, by A24. Critics gave it a largely positive response. The film is the first of a film series of the same name, which includes a prequel film titled Pearl, which was released on September 16, 2022, and a sequel titled MaXXXine, which was released on July 5, 2024.
